The Hawkeye Model Railroad Club was formed in 2006 and is a 501(c)3 educational corporation whose mission is to educate the public about railroads and the hobby of model railroading.
The club currently occupies about 2000 sq. ft. of space at 860 Quarry Road in Coralville, Iowa. The club's HO scale layout depicts typical railroad scenes in Iowa and the Midwest, including small towns, farms, factories, and an ethanol plant. About 80 percent of the scenery is complete. The single track main line is about 7.2 scale miles long and there are 2 branch lines, 6 switching yards, and numerous passing sidings. About 40 industries are served by the railroad. Bench work is based on the L-girder method, the sub roadbed is ½-in. plywood, and the roadbed is ½-in. Homasote or mdf spline. Most of the track is code 83. A North Coast
Engineering digital command control (DCC) system is used to operate trains, and 12 to 18 trains can be operated at one time. Train lengths of 15 ft can be accommodated in staging, yards, and passing tracks. During Operating Sessions the layout is operated as a real railroad, with a dispatcher, track warrants, and multiple through trains, yard operations, and local switching jobs. Visitors are welcome at operating sessions; please contact us in advance to attend an operating session.
