New for 2019 - Monthly Clinics

During the fall of 2019 we are offering clinics on a variety of topics that may be of interest to new modelers as well as those who have been in the hobby for a while.   All clinics will be held at our club room, 860 Quarry Road, Coralville, Iowa.  (Door across the street from Konami Restaurant.)  Clinics will last approximately one hour with time afterwards for questions.  Our layout will also be open during this time.  

10:00 AM September 14: Evaluating and Improving Rolling Stock

This clinic will cover the skills and techniques necessary to make your freight cars roll smoother and avoid derailments. We will discuss choice of freight cars for your layout, We will also show you how to improve freight car operation by changing couplers, checking wheels, and adding weight if necessary.   Feel free to bring a favorite car along for evaluation.

10 AM October 12: Selecting and laying track and switches:

Building a new layout?  This clinic will discuss how to choose the right track and switches for your needs and how to install them for trouble-free operation.  Topics will include

  • Sectional track vs flex track
  • What "code" should I buy?
  • How do I connect the power supply to my track?
  • How do I prevent short circuits?
  • How do I keep my track clean?

And many other topics.

November 9: Installing DCC Decoders

This clinic will teach you how to install a DCC decoder in a non-DCC locomotive.   This is a hands-on clinic and you will actually install a decoder in your locomotive.  Pre-registration is required and we will contact you to find out what kind of locomotive you have.   We will order an appropriate decoder with your approval and have it available for you.   You will be responsible for the actual cost of the decoder; all other tools and supplies will be provided.  Use the "Contact us" button on the home page to register.
